All Things Being Equal....

A short term project carried out between January and April 2005, to inform Race Equality Officers about learning disability. The premise was the inequality experienced as a result of having a learning disability is compounded by the inequalities experienced from belonging to a Black and minority ethnic community and the ongoing experiences of social marginalisation. This renders this specific group of service users doubly disenfranchised and in danger of not receiving the support they require.

A series of conferences were held in Birmingham, Bradford and London to raise awareness amongst Race Equality Officers of learning disability issues. The conferences included:

  • what is currently happening in the field of learning disability
  • implications for statutory authorities if they fail to implement recent equality legislation
  • how to achieve joined-up service planning
