This project was funded by a Department of Health Section 64 grant to run for three years commencing 2003, and was launched at a conference in London attended by Dr Stephen Ladyman, then Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health.
The aims of the project were:
- to encourage the sharing of good practice
- to inform policy by collective response
- to provide information
- to provide opportunity for discussion
- to share training resources
- to keep people informed in order to make change happen
A newsletter has been produced four times a year and currently there are approximately 1,250 people who have joined the Network. In addition a national conference has been held once a year (October/November) in London.

The Race Equality Impact Assessment of Valuing People Now has been published in reponse to a request at the NLDEN conference in April 2008. In this document, the report looks at the five key areas of Valuing People Now and relates it to disadvantages faced by people with learning disabilities from BME and also targets for improvements. Summer 2006
As the original funding for this project has now ceased, we have explored ways of continuing the services that the Network provides and we are now able confirm that the Department of Health has provided a small grant to allow for the maintenance of the advice service in the coming year, and Lloyds TSB is supporting a programme of development work with partner members from the Network, and to extend the Network into Wales.
It is now planned that the newsletter will be produced three times a year, and the current edition (number 12) was published in January 2007.
Conference 2006
This was held on Monday 6 November 2006
