Pricing Learning Disability Services

In 2002, William Laing was commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation to investigate the possibility of developing a model to calculate a ‘Fair Price’ for care services. The result was a report and spreadsheet designed to provide a “transparent and robust model for calculating the costs of providing nursing and residential care for older people”.

Following publication, the original toolkit and report were widely used by both local authorities and care home providers as a basis for establishing the actual cost of care home provision. Laing & Buisson were commissioned by several English councils to assist in reviewing the reasonableness of baseline fee levels paid to local care home providers.

ARC have been working to support member organisations to understand the implications of the pricing tools for their services.

This included a members only series of regional workshops, background information about the various tools being developed and individual consultancy to help managers respond. Further information and resources including notes of the regional meetings and updates on the Getting to Grips with the Money project, can be found in the members section of the website
