Clear Thoughts is a DoH funded three year project that aims to
offer easy to read information about mental health in learning disability
for individuals, their families/carers and professionals.
The website address is www.clearthoughts.info
There have been lots of improvements and developments to the website
recently, including:
- New specially commissioned images developed by Change have been added
- The site now has full audio for all text via Browsealoud software
- New information has been added, including details about the Human Rights Act, Capacity, Decision making with medical professional and Head Start an easy read resource for those working with younger people regarding their mental health.
One of the next tasks of Clear Thoughts is to develop a word bank to go along
with the newly commissioned images. We would hope as many people with a
learning disability and their carers contribute to this word bank of the
words people use to describe mental health issues.

Another ARC project - the Candle (CAMHS and New Directions in Learning
Disability and Ethnicity) resource can now be downloaded, for free, from the

Autumn 2007 NewsletterWelcome to the first newsletter (click here to download the newsletter) for this important project which is about making a website about mental health for people with a learning disability, their families, carers and supporters both volunteers and paid staff. World Mental Health Day is on 10 October so is seems a good time to send out this newsletter.
Making sure that everyone can get something from the website will be difficult but we will do our best! We would welcome feedback on the website that we know still needs the addition of more colours, photos, drawings and images, a glossary and easy tools to help get around the site. Click here to see the site and then let us have your feedback by filling in the section at the bottom of this page.

ARC are developing a Knowledge Centre focussing on Mental Health in Learning Disability
The three year project, funded by the Department of Health, aims to become a web-based 'port of call' for individuals, their families and carers and front line social care staff for information and resources regarding mental health in learning disability.
The Knowledge Centre will offer information on what is, and how to, promote positive mental health, the differences between emotional distress (mental ill-health) and learning disability and issues such as dementia and depression. Factors such as sensory impairment, autism, ethnicity and policy and law will also be included.
The information will be provided in as clear and accessible a style as possible and rather than re-inventing any wheels will direct people to relevant organisations, websites and contacts.
If you would like more information about the Knowledge Centre, share areas of good practice, or be kept up-to-date with the project and when it will be available on-line then please contact the project worker, David Grundy by email or call 01246 555043.
