A distance learning pack for best practice in handling the money of people with a learning disability.
“Just because care staff manage their own money does not mean that they necessarily have the skills to manage the finances of others”
In Safe Keeping; supporting people who use care services with their finances - CSCI May 2007
Supporting someone with a learning disability to manage their money brings its own particular challenges. This training pack will help care staff to find their way through the maze of bank accounts, direct debits and standing orders, budgeting and dealing with debt. It will help them detect possible fraud or financial abuse, and to know what to do about it. Most important of all, it will enable them to support service users to take as much control as possible of their own fi nancial affairs.
The material in this training pack is based on ‘My Money Matters: guidance on best practice in handling the money of people with a learning disability’. ARC was funded by the Department of Health to produce this guidance, and it was published in 2006.
