Specialist Training - Relationships and Sexuality
Aim
The aim of the module is:- to provide opportunities for participants to consider their responsibilities towards the people they work with in facilitating and supporting fulfilling relationships, and preventing sexual and other types of abuse
- to explore examples of good practice which have relevance for participants’ work practice
- to learn from the stories and experiences of the people who matter most – people with learning disabilities and family carers
Objectives
To achieve successful completion of the course, participants will be required to:- explain why personal attitudes towards relationships and sexuality are relevant to work practice
- discuss the relevance of human rights to sexuality and sexual expression
- explain why certain areas of sexuality are more contentious than others
- identify and evaluate methods of providing support to people with learning disabilities in the areas of relationships an sexuality
- outline their own responsibilities in supporting the sexual well-being of the people they work with
- discuss sexual and other types of abuse and identify their own role in preventing it and dealing with abusive situations
