Specialist Training - Relationships and Sexuality

Aim

The aim of the module is:
  • to provide opportunities for participants to consider their responsibilities towards the people they work with in facilitating and supporting fulfilling relationships, and preventing sexual and other types of abuse
  • to explore examples of good practice which have relevance for participants’ work practice
  • to learn from the stories and experiences of the people who matter most – people with learning disabilities and family carers

Objectives

To achieve successful completion of the course, participants will be required to:
  1. explain why personal attitudes towards relationships and sexuality are relevant to work practice
  2. discuss the relevance of human rights to sexuality and sexual expression
  3. explain why certain areas of sexuality are more contentious than others
  4. identify and evaluate methods of providing support to people with learning disabilities in the areas of relationships an sexuality
  5. outline their own responsibilities in supporting the sexual well-being of the people they work with
  6. discuss sexual and other types of abuse and identify their own role in preventing it and dealing with abusive situations
