Death is a natural part of life, but that does not make it easy to cope with. Loss may be felt even when no death is involved, for example when a close friend moves away. ARC Cymru offers Loss & Bereavement Training for staff supporting people with learning disabilities.
Objectives and Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course participants will:
- Be aware of the meaning of 'good health' and features of 'bad death'.
- Be aware of the myths around society being a death-denying society.
- Be aware of and define the terms supportive and terminal and palliative care.
- Discuss loss and what emotions it might trigger.
- Discuss the fears felt by a dying person and felt by staff.
- Be aware of the circle of grief and its implications for the grieving person and support staff.
- Discuss the theories around disenfranchised grief in people with a learning disability.
- Be aware that loss may be felt even when death is not involved, for instance when a staff member moves on to other services.
- Where to go for further support for staff and for the supported person.
