WAG Research Project: Planned Hospital Admission

ARC Cymru undertook a hospital admission research project for the Welsh Assembly Government in 2007

ARC Cymru were commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government to undertake research into the Planned Hospital Admission of people who have a learning disability. The aim of the project was to gather data to determine the scale of the support provided by social care staff during planned admissions and to gather protocols and examples of good practice to facilitate admission.

We sought to engage both social care providers and health professionals in this quantitative study. Local Health Boards, Primary Care Trusts and Local Authorities were approached to gather any protocols they have in place to support the admission of people with a learning disability into hospital, and for examples of good practice in their area.

We also approached voluntary, statutory and private learning disability service providers to gather data about the numbers of service user admissions since November 2005, the planning involved, the nature of the support provided by social care staff, how much time these staff were engaged in providing that support, and any sources of funding.

Information was also sought from healthcare workers and families and carers.

Planned admissions include those for tests, dental work, treatments, operations or palliative care. The research outline did not include admission to acute mental health services or Accident and Emergency visits although, if a visit to A&E leads to a stay in hospital, this was included. Any relevant material outside the primary focus of the research was included in the report appendix.
